Ebook About It is 741. After subduing the pagan religions in the east, halting the march of Islam in the west, and conquering the continent for the Merovingian kings, mayor of the palace Charles the Hammer has one final ambition-the throne. Only one thing stands in his way-he is dying. Charles cobbles together a plan to divide the kingdom among his three sons, betroth his daughter to a Lombard prince to secure his southern border, and keep the Church unified behind them through his friend Bishop Boniface. Despite his best efforts, the only thing to reign after Charles's death is chaos. His daughter has no intention of marrying anyone, let alone a Lombard prince. His two eldest sons question the rights of their younger pagan stepbrother, and the Church demands a steep price for their support. Son battles son, Christianity battles paganism, and Charles's daughter flees his court for an enemy's love. Based on a true story, Anvil of God is a whirlwind of love, honor, sacrifice, and betrayal that follows a bereaved family's relentless quest for power and destiny.Book Anvil Of God: Book One of the Carolingian Chronicles Review :
I was excited and apprehensive about this book; for starters, you don't see many works on the Carolingians, at least, not in fiction, and yet it was a time of great strife, of change, and the actual story should be made into a movie. For those not in the know, but for the actions of one Christian mayor in the 8th Century, we might all have been Muslims. Most people know or at least have heard about the Crusades and the charismatic leader of the Muslims, Salah Ah-din and incorrectly figure that was when the Muslim conversion was averted. Truth be told, we lost the Crusades eventually and yet, everyone retained their individual faiths. The Battle of Tours, sometimes called the Battle of Poitiers (732AD) was a last-ditch effort, a last stand of Christian Europe against a Muslim invader, set to conquer the known world of the time. This books picks up 9 years after that fateful battle and we find the hero, Charles Martel (the Hammer) dying, while trying to sort out dynastic succession. A lot of these medieval historical fiction books make every attempt to recapture what that era must have been like, felt like - there are a few writers who have mastered that ability; Bernard Cornwell, Stephen Lawhead and Elizabeth Chadwick spring to mind when talking about such. This author is very good- one thing I always look for is the ability to get lost in the book- does it feel like that? Is that the way they did it? These are normally intangibles that aid or harm the immersive experience. A fine grasp on language is necessary and this author knows how to write. I look forward to successive books. This book had good potential in my eyes because I know so little has been written about the Carolingian Empire. Though the book "blurb" advertises the story to be about the sons of Charles Martel - Carloman, Pippin and Gripho - and the political uses of his daughter Hiltrude (often called "Trudy" in this story which feels a bit anachronistic to me), I managed to read only about 71% of the story before putting it down. (Thank you Kindle for giving me the odd percentage). This story isn't so much about the brothers as it is about Hiltrude. She has no intention of marrying the Lombard prince that her father arranges for her to marry just before he dies and then decides to run off to find the one man she believes she wants to marry after giving herself to him in a pagan rite masterminded by Charles' second wife, Swanhild. Somewhere along the journey to find her true beloved, she meets another man who first holds her captive, then seems to fall in love with her. Now there's a conflict of heart. Not to mention the third fellow hot on her heels, but only with the intention of returning her to the Lombard prince. Only problem with guy #3 is that he and Hiltrude grew up together, learning to fight together and learning that boys and girls are different as we grow up.So, once the three brothers fall into a stalemate - Gripho inside a fortified city, Carloman without while Pippin tries to broker peace between them - the story focuses entirely toward the sister. And Gripho is uncontrollable, even by his own mother, so that kind of put me off as well.
